1. Discussing the system of education in Great Britain and in Russia.
I see you know a lot about schools. Let’s speak about the system of education in Great Britain and in Russia. Let’s start with Great Britain. Look at this table and tell us about pre-school education.
Who will present pre-school education? (Слайд 5)
Pre- school education is optional. For small children there are state kindergartens, private kindergartens and “nursery classes” in schools.
Who will tell us about primary school?
Most children start their education at the age of 5. Primary school may be divided into 2 parts; during the first 2 years reading, writing and arithmetic are taught for about 20 minutes a day. There is usually no written time-table. Much time is spent in modeling from clay or drawing, reading and singing. In Year 3 the real work starts. The children have lessons in arithmetic, reading and composition. History, Geography, Nature Study, Art and Music, PE, swimming are also in the time table. All schools follow the same National Curriculum. The children attend the primary school for 6 years.
And now tell us about comprehensive school.
Comprehensive schools provide compulsory education for children between the ages of 11 and 16. Comprehensive schools offer 5-year courses to all pupils; there are no entrance examinations there. Some children enter grammar schools which also provide secondary education. If a pupil wants to study at a grammar school, he or she has to pass 11+ exams. There are 10 subjects, which all children must study at secondary school, and there are some optional subjects that are different in different schools.
The whole period of compulsory education is divided into 4 stages. At the end of each stage (Years 2, 6, 9 and 11) pupils have national exams.
The second group is for education system in Russia. Let’s discuss it. (Слайд 6)
Who will present pre- school education in Russia?
Pre-school education in Russia is optional. There are kindergartens and preparatory classes in schools.
Who will tell us about primary school?
-In Russia children start their education at the age of 6 or 7.They attend primary school for 4 years. At primary school children learn reading, writing, arithmetic, arts and sport.
And now tell us about secondary school.
At 10 pupils go to secondary schools. Pupils can choose types of school which they want to attend. They can go to gymnasium, lyceum, a school specializing in English, mathematics or some other subjects. Pupils can attend comprehensive schools. These schools take children of all abilities. At 15 pupils take exams. After that they can stay at school or go to college or medical school. It depends on the results of the exams. Those who stay at school at 17 have exams at school. Pupils need them to enter a university.
